  • Autonomous oil spill response vessel makes debut August 23, 2019
The world’s first autonomous vessel designed to tackle oil spills has taken to the water for the first time, in a demonstration on the US east coast. Developed by Boston-based Sea Machines Robotics, the autonomous system was deployed on an igor/Kvichak Marine Industries-built skimmer boat, owned by Marine Spill Response Corp (MSRC). A series of […] The post […]
  • Smart sensor makes sense of wounds August 23, 2019
Smart sensor technology being developed in Edinburgh could provide a better understanding of wound formation and treatment Wounds can be unpleasant for those that have them and costly to treat, with the NHS spending £4.5-5.1bn each year to manage them. Now, with EPSRC-funding, Dr Michael Crichton, a biomedical engineer at Heriot-Watt University and Dr Jenna […]
  • Artificial evolution teaches robots to swarm in the wild August 23, 2019
UK researchers have embedded swarm robots with processing power that enables in situ artificial evolution and independent learning.   Refining the behaviour of robot swarms in this way has previously required external computation, but this limits them to lab settings where those additional resources are located. The new research, from the University of Brist […]
  • Ultrafast pulsed laser joins ceramics August 23, 2019
Ultrafast pulsed laser welding has been used to join ceramics, an advance that could lead to pacemakers with no metal parts and electronics for space and other harsh environments. Described in Science, the new ceramic welding technology has developed by engineers at the University of California San Diego and the University of California Riverside. The proces […]
  • Castrol Wind Academy aims to plug renewables skills gap August 22, 2019
Lubricants manufacturer Castrol is launching a new Wind Academy in an effort to address the skills gap in the fast-growing wind energy sector. According to the company, almost 80 per cent of stakeholders in the industry are finding suitably trained staff either ‘difficult’ or ‘very difficult’. The rapid growth of the wind industry means there […] The post Ca […]
